105,000 words on Western Watch!
Ok, so it’s still the first draft, but the end is in sight. The novel will top out at about 32 chapters (I am writing Chapter 27) right now.
Then comes these daunting tasks:
- 2nd Draft — edit for plot and structure
- 3rd Draft — characterization and dialogue
- 4th Draft — imagery and polish
Yikes! Still lots to do!
Winter is Coming
Chapter 26 has now been written, previewed by SYoshiko, and submitted to my writers’ group. The writers’ group on the whole thought is was good, but feel I tend to over-write. Oh well, that’s what second drafts are for and it is always easier to cut than to add.
Merreth’s early adventures take place in the western plains under a baking sun. Yeah, I know, she wears black leather and would probably cook out there but nothing says BAD ASS like black leather. :)
Eventually she will return to the eastern provinces of the Matriarchy where winter weather is cold and damp when it’s not snowing. SYoshiko has pointed out that Merreth will need s
"Good Boy" by SYoshiko.
This is a gift to me from SYoshiko, and one that I treasure for many reasons. It depicts Lady Merreth as she might appear in our world, but only after a LOT of convincing to wear the outfit. :)

Not Dead Yet
Well, chapter 25 of Western Watch is finished. The first draft now sits with :iconsyoshiko: and my writers’ group. I’m pleased that Western Watch is now at the 99,750 word mark with about another 30,000 to go. Chapter 25 ends with Merreth once again hip deep in trouble.
Speaking of :iconsyoshiko:, she has just completed another paired image for me. This is one of the two, depicting Merreth at the feet of a Clan Warrior from earlier in Western Watch.
Things don’t look good, but never count Merreth out. She’s …

The Writing Journey
The end of Western Watch is finally coming into view. As I look back on the first draft I see many places where I could have shortened my journey, but hindsight is always 20/20. I’ve been keeping SYoshiko busy with several pieces that will eventually figure into a trailer for the Western Watch novel.
Here is the latest: Blood Before You. Seems that everything Merreth touches comes away red and wet. :)

And what better place to get away than a place with a view like this?
So after a bit of a break, I am back to writing Western Watch, Lady Merreth’s debut novel. The current word count is about 90,000 words and I estimate there is about another 30,000 to go. Of course, I do enjoy the University Tales that I have posted, so I might put up another installment of them before long.
